Federer: “I Would Like To Measure Myself To Nadal This Year On Clay”

◼️ The Swiss confirmed that he will not play in Monte Carlo, but hinted at his desire to compete in Madrid, Rome or Rolland Garros. He will make the decision after the ATP 1,000 Masters of Miami.

After a year 2017 in which Roger Federer didn’t step on the clay in any tournament of the circuit, the Swiss tennis player would be rethinking the option of returning to play a tournament on clay in 2018, something that will confirm after the dispute of the Masters 1,000 of Miami (March 21-April 1).

For the moment, Federer has already announced that he will not play the first major tournament of the clay season, the Masters 1000 Monte Carlo (April 15-22) to coincide with a trip to Africa related to the foundation that bears his name.

After his victory against Filip Krajinovic, Federer was prudent about his participation in the clay season, the favorite surface of Rafa Nadal. “I don’tt know, to be honest, I have not thought about it yet, I don’t know how much progress will help me against Rafa on clay, he’s still the one who works best on clay, I don’t know if I’ll move better than I did on hard court. I have not played on this surface for a long time“, he said in statements made by L’Équipe newspaper.

The Basel tennis player also analyzed that it will depend on his physical and mental condition that he plays or not on clay, although he did not hesitate to admit that he would like to measure himself again with Nadal on clay. “The fact that I play on the clay doesn’t depend on the presence or absence of Rafa and Novak, it depends on what I want to do, to avoid injuries, what my head tells me to do, but I would like to play with Rafa over I would like to see what would happen now but I have no guarantee that I have more options now than before, I always think that Rafa is the player to beat on the clay and he’s undoubtedly the best player in the world & tennis history”.

Roger Federer has not contested a claycourt match on the ATP circuit for almost two years, in particular since May 2016, when he fell in the eighth finals of the Masters 1000 in Rome against Dominic Thiem. The last land tournament conquered by Federer dates back to 2015, when Pablo Cuevas won the first edition of the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open. We will have to wait to see if Federer decides to end his recent drought on clay.
