Official! Canelo-Golovkin Fight Is Canceled Due To The Mexican Suspension

◼️ There will be no stellar fight on May 5 between Saúl Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

The fight budgeted for May 5 between the Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was officially suspended, given the sanction to the fighter from Guadalajara for a positive doping by clenbuterol.

The president of Golden Boy Promotions, Eric Gómez, announced this decision, despite the fact that in the last examinations Álvarez showed negative results, which have not lifted the suspension imposed on him by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

“We are going to cancel the date of May 5 at this time, there is a hearing for April 18 with the Commission and unfortunately there will not be time to promote for May 5”,  explained the promoter.

Canelo regretted that the cancellation has been reached and reiterated that it is unfair because his positive was to eat contaminated meat in Guadalajara, a situation that has happened several athletes, even with soccer players of the Mexican Soccer Team.

“Even though I’m not being intentionally sanctioned and I respect it, it weighs me down a lot. The fight, the rematch, will have to wait and I’m disappointed and sad because I’ve been preparing for this very tough fight, to prove that I’m the best middle weight of the world”, Alvarez said at a press conference in Los Angeles.

He also regretted seeing his name stained, because he clarified that he has always been a clean fighter and that even when the tests are not obligatory, he has voluntarily submitted to them. He even pointed out that he has done around 90 exams and in all of them he has left clean. Obviously, except for the two that tested positive, on February 17 and 20.

“I feel sad, helplessly unable to be in this fight”, he added. “I want to tell the media, the fans, that I have never disappointed them.”
