The Reason Coutinho Doesn’t Play In The Champions League With FC Barcelona

The UEFA regulations limit the illusions of the Barcelona fans ahead of the 2017-18 season. Coutinho is already the most expensive signing in the history of the club, but the fact that he joined the winter market brings a small asterisk for Ernesto Valverde: the Brazilian can not participate in the Champions League with the Blaugrana shirt, at least for this campaign.

As a rule, a player may not play in a UEFA competition (UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, excluding the UEFA Super Cup) with more than one club during the same season.

However, a player may play with a club in the first, second, third qualifying round, as in the play-off, of the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa League, and subsequently represent another club in the phase of groups of any of the two competitions.
