Thinking of getting a cat?

Well, cats are known for being unpredictable when it comes to their temperament and personality. Some may be mischievous (read more) and playful, while others can be affectionate and friendly. Depending on the breed, these traits may exist in one or more. Nevertheless, finding a specific breed can’t always be one-size-fits-all. Hence, when finding a cat breed, you might want to consider your lifestyle too.

While large cat breeds can’t be rehomed in a small, tiny apartment, and small cat breeds can be too small for your liking, a medium cat breed may be the perfect fit for you.

Typically weighing between 10 and 15 pounds, medium-sized cats are adaptable to almost any shelter or home. Whether you live in a small apartment or a large house, choosing medium cat breeds is an excellent choice if you want a feline companion but don’t want something too extreme. Some of them have the most affectionate characteristics that anyone loves. With this in mind, we have created a list of some of the most popular (and the friendliest) medium-sized cat breeds for you!

Exotic Shorthair

The Exotic is a medium-sized cobby cat, bred as a short-haired version of the Persian. In short, it is an alternative lazy man’s Persian but a low-maintenance version. Hence, he shares the same sweet face and gentle and affectionate nature as his long-haired cousins.

If you work outside the home, you don’t have to be worried because these Exotics can stand by themselves at home for long hours. These independent felines are also generally good with children and seniors, as long as they’re given daily attention and toys to keep them occupied and entertained.

Persian

Speaking of, here’s the Persian, a long-haired breed of cat known as the glamor puss of the cat world. These medium-sized Persian cats are actually one of the oldest cat breeds that can be traced all the way back to the 1600s. They usually weigh between 7-12 pounds.

Persians have rounded — heads, eyes, and ears — which makes them look well-rounded. Its distinctive characteristic that makes them stand out is their long, silky coat—one word to describe them: luxurious.

True to their appearance, these Persians are also known for being quiet and sweet. They’re the type of cats who would love to sit anywhere around, even in your lap! While they are also affectionate and friendly, they’re not the usual type to demand constant attention. In fact, some of them can be more reserved and aloof around strangers until they get to know them.

American Shorthair

Another feline with a gentle demeanor, the American Shorthair is a well-rounded companion that adapts well in any environment or home. They are also medium-sized cat breeds with thick, dense coats that are generally low maintenance. Weekly brushing would do.

Because of their docile demeanor and easy-to-maintain lifestyle, these domestic cats are excellent choices for first-time pet owners. In addition to being playful, these cats are also quiet and calm, making them a perfect choice as a companion for any household. Here’s a guide for first-timers:

Scottish Fold

Like Persian, the Scottish Fold also has the appearance of round-looking cats. Often described as “owl-like,” their eyes are very rounded, bright and clear, and their ears are folded forward due to its natural mutation.

They are medium-sized cats with a laid-back nature but playful and adores constant attention from their human companions. These Folds are very friendly, and when introduced from an early age, they can be good friends with other animals (like dogs).

At the same time, they are pretty smart for a cat breed, which means they need mental stimulation to keep their mind sharp. If not, they can be pretty stubborn. Reinforcing positive rewards for them to perform tricks and learn activities like hide-and-seek or fetch should be added to your list.

Abyssinian

When it comes to the list of the friendliest cat breeds, the Abyssinian has consistently ranked near the top of the list. They are people-oriented and highly affectionate, even towards children, making them an excellent pet for families. At the same time, they are relatively easy to care for.

However, because of their inquisitive nature (after all, they are one of the most intelligent cat breeds), they may end up following you around all of the time. They are hungry for attention, and they may demand it when the situation calls for it.

They are also very active, which explains why they have well-developed muscles and a long body. Abyssinian is also a medium-sized cat that weighs between 8 to 12 pounds. In fact, they also make excellent climbers. Hence, with a certain amount of restraint, make sure not to put toxic things near your pet!

Siamese

Many cat owners say that siamese have a “dog-like” personality. These kitties mesh well into any environment, with their friendly and affectionate demeanor. Also, with their outgoing and melodramatic temperaments, it’s no surprise that they are the ones who crave the most attention.

They love human companionship, and they might demand it, especially during playtime! Additionally, they are extremely talkative, and with their deep, loud voice, they would be interested in having a conversation with you. Also, don’t be surprised if these felines climb on you as if you were a tree; they do it often!

Meanwhile, while they may appear really playful and active, they actually have a gentle, loving nature, making them a popular pet among families.
