Abahani clinch Independence Cup after outclassing Kings

The resounding 3-0 win in front of around 10,000 fans ended local powerhouse Abahani’s three-year trophy drought

Local giants Abahani Limited bagged their second Independence Cup title, and first since 1990, after outclassing domestic rivals Bashundhara Kings 3-0 in the final at Shaheed Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur Saturday.

After a goalless first half, the Sky Blues went ahead through a Rakib Hossain goal in the 53rd minute before a brace from Brazilian Dorielton sealed their first victory against the Kings after six winless matches.

After their triumph in 1990, Abahani reached the Independence Cup final twice since then but lost on both occasions.

The resounding win in front of around 10,000 fans also ended local powerhouse Abahani’s three-year trophy drought with their last silverware being the 2018 Federation Cup.

Defender Tutul Hossain Badshah in his immediate reaction said, “Alhamdulillah, we’re very happy that we have become champions and able to win the trophy. We wanted to start the new season well and hope to continue this spree in the whole season.”

After a barren first half, Rakib finally broke the deadlock with a placing shot off a Raphael Augusto pass

Dorielton doubled the lead for the Dhanmondi outfit converting a spot kick at the hour mark and he completed the rout with his second.

Bashundhara however, tried their best to stage a fightback but couldn’t convert any chances in the remaining proceedings.

Earlier, Abahani stormed into the final when they blanked Saif Sporting Club 2-0 in the first semi-final while Bashundhara came from behind to beat Bangladesh Police Football Club 2-1 in the second semi.
