Newborn abandoned, attendant doped in DMCH neurosurgery ward

Hospital director says they’re analyzing CCTV footage

The body of a newborn was found in an abandoned state at the neurosurgery ward of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Monday night.

Ward Master Abul Hossain discovered the premature baby boy wrapped in a scarf at a corner of the ward – set up in the veranda – but found no relatives, Shahbagh police Sub-Inspector Harun-or-Rashid said.

DMCH Director Brigadier General Nazmul Huq said that they were analyzing the CCTV footage to identify the persons involved in the incident.

In the afternoon, the attendant of a patient was found in an unconscious state at the same ward.

An on-duty senior nurse rescued Hamida Begum, 45, of Kabirhat in Noakhali. She was given primary treatment and admitted to the medicine ward.

Her brother Anwar Hossain, 35, was admitted to the ward with injuries he sustained during a clash centring the Union Parishad elections.

“A group of fraudsters doped her and snatched Tk20,000 in cash, her mobile phone and fruits brought for the patient,” said Bakul Begum, younger sister of Hamida Begum.

DMCH police outpost In-Charge Md Bachchu Mia said that he had heard about the incident but got no written complaint.
