Investigators yet to draw conclusion in Sagar-Runi murder case after 10 years

Many horrifying and shocking cases that drew public attention and triggered street agitations are not seeing any progress due to a lengthy investigation process.

One of those cases is the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi takes the lead as after 10 years investigators are yet to draw a conclusion.

Maasranga Television news editor Sagar and his wife, ATN Bangla senior reporter Runi, were killed in front of their child in their rented apartment at West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012. The bodies were recovered the next morning.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the investigating agency, was asked for the 84th time to submit the probe report by a Dhaka Court on Sunday.

Shafiqul Alam was the seventh investigator in the case assigned on July 7, 2019. He mentioned in the report that the previous officer had arrested eight accused. Six of them are in jail, while the two others are out on bail.

The seized evidence was sent to the Independent Forensic Service (IFS) in the US for DNA testing. According to the DNA test report, the DNA of two unidentified men was also found. The investigators contacted another American lab, Parabon Snapshot, to identify the unknowns.

Though the statistics of such long-pending investigation is not available, people can know updates of only a few of them that have been monitored by the media from time to time. Islamic TV show host Maulana Nurul Islam Farooqi is one of those.

The report of the murder case has not been submitted to the court even in eight years.

Farooqi, the international affairs secretary of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, was killed by miscreants on August 27, 2014 at his home in East Rajabazar of the capital. After a case was filed against nine unidentified persons, a total of 16 people, including 13 members of JMB, Ansarullah Bangla Team and Harkat-ul-Jihad (HuJI), were arrested. Twelve of them are still in jail.

It has taken four years for the investigation report in the murder case of blogger Avijit Roy to come out. The investigating agency took three years to submit the report of the murder case of publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan to the court.

Five investigation officers have been changed in the last five years but no killers were identified over the rape and murder of Comilla Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu inside Mainamati Cantonment.

Now the Police Investigation Bureau (PIB) is in charge of the investigation.

Tonu’s family is frustrated over the lack of progress in the case, saying that they are not getting justice as they are not influential.

Frustrating progress of Sagar-Runi murder case

Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu said: “The investigating officer is still not finding any clue. So, the report is getting delayed again and again. Even if the investigators do not find involvement of any of the accused, then a report should be given soon.”

Noting that no other case has taken so long to investigate, he said that no case can remain completely “clueless”.

In this regard, Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Kumar Karmakar told Bangla Tribune that if investigation reports in such murder cases were not given soon, there is a danger that the evidence related to the murder would be lost.

Human rights activist Nur Khan Liton said: “If there is a fear of involvement of any powerful entity or state body, then those cases do not go very far.”

As a result, no matter how many crimes are committed in front of the people, after a while, people basically forgot about it, he added.
