◼️ The central injured himself in the friendly match on Saturday against Portugal, but Roberto Martinez decided to wait until the day before the debut. Benteke was off the list.
Vincent Kompany has been included in the final team of Belgium for the World Cup in Russia, despite suffering an injury in the friendly against Portugal on Saturday.
“The situation is very clear: we are going to try to use the rules, we have to define the campus 24 hours before Panama (June 18), so, until then, we will try to give the maximum time to see what is Vinny’s reaction,” coach Roberto Martinez explained at a press conference.
“We have spoken very closely with Manchester City and the experience of recent years is that Vinny’s reaction to certain soft tissue injuries cannot be described by a scanner, he must wait between seven and eight days,” the coach added.
“He’s a leader, he’s been working very hard in the concentration and he played fantastic against Portugal, it’s essential for us to give him every opportunity, it’s a World Cup, it’s not just any competition,” added Martinez. In case Kompany doesn’t recover, Laurent Ciman is the one who’s on the waiting list.
Jordan Lukaku, Matz Sels, and Christian Kabasele have been out of the 23, as has Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke, a decision that Martinez described as the toughest he had to take.
Belgium will face Panama in their first Group G match in Sochi, before facing Tunisia and England.
